GEORGE ATIYEH PRIZE
2011 George N. Atiyeh Prize Awards
This year the George N. Atiyeh Prize committee received two outstanding applicants and thus decided to award both, Ms. Latifa Baali and Ms. Amanda Click.
Latifa is currently enrolled in the MLS program at Queens College-CUNY and is currently a Bibliographic Assistant at Butler Library, Columbia University. Born in Morocco, Latifa speaks Arabic, French and understands the Berber dialect, Tamazight. Latifa holds a B.A. in communication studies from Al-Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco.
Amanda is currently a Ph.D. student enrolled in the newly created Educating Librarians in the Middle East: Building Bridges for the 21st century at the University of North Carolina in conjunction with Duke University. Amanda is currently taking Arabic with aspirations for studying abroad. She also spent three years living in Cairo while working as a Coordinator of Instruction in the Main library at the American University in Cairo.

The George N. Atiyeh Prize Committee.
The George Atiyeh Prize was founded by the Middle East Librarians Association in 1999 to honor George N. Atiyeh, retired Head of the Near East Section of the Library Congress, founding member of MELA and of the Middle East Microform Project, for his many contributions to Middle East librarianship and scholarship. Dr. Atiyeh is the first and only honorary member of MELA. The George Atiyeh Prize offers financial aid to attend the annual meetings of MELA and of the Middle East Studies Association of North America (MESA).
Awardees receive a cash award in addition to their registration fees for both the MELA and MESA annual conferences. Awardees must agree to attend both the MELA and MESA conferences in their entirety, to allow their names and photographs to be used in any publicity by MELA or other organizations contacted by MELA, and to write a report on their conference experience, to be published in MELA Notes.
Applicants must be currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited library/information science program.
Applicants must submit the following information no later than 30 September 2012 for the November conference to the George Atiyeh Prize Committee.
1. Name, postal address, phone number, e-mail address, and name
of program in which currently enrolled
2. Letter from the Admissions Officer or other official of your college or
department, stating that you are a student in good academic standing
3. Description of your academic, work-related or other background in Middle
East studies and/or librarianship
4. Statement of your career goals, including a description of your current
course of study
5. Statement of why you wish to attend these meetings
6. Names, postal addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses of two references
